The Construction Sector Revolution: the MCS Challenge

Automation, recycled materials, and a new work culture to overcome rising costs and the flight of young talent
Massimo Locatelli - MCS SpA

The contemporary economic landscape requires continuous adaptation and a radical shift in perspective. Today, the construction sector stands at a crossroads of fundamental importance, caught in a complex vice. On one hand, there is a staggering surge in raw material costs, while on the other, a chronic and worrying shortage of skilled labor persists. To remain competitive in this scenario, companies must reinvent themselves and structure new operational models. Massimo Locatelli, a representative of MCS S.p.A—a solid Bergamo-based company (Italy) specializing in screeds and flooring—discussed these urgent issues. During his appearance on the Challenge program, hosted by Matteo Valléro exclusively on Amazon Music, the clear need for a cultural and technological evolution emerged.

The Construction Sector: Price Hikes and Automation 4.0

The generalized price increase has severely hit the entire building supply chain. Essential elements for laying the foundations of any project, such as sand, cement, resins, and polystyrene, have seen constant hikes. Added to this is the heavy impact of fuel costs, necessary for heavy logistics. This inflationary dynamic makes it increasingly difficult to maintain a balanced final selling price, both for private contracts and large construction sites of real estate groups.

To stem this phenomenon, the guiding principle adopted by MCS SpA is the absolute optimization of processes. The company has chosen to invest heavily in logistical and production automation, equipping itself with fleets of latest-generation automated vehicles. These special silo trucks allow dry raw materials to be transported and mixed automatically only once they physically arrive at the construction site. This approach guarantees the total elimination of waste, as instant on-site mixing ensures no unused materials or scraps are left to be disposed of. In short, they consume and produce only what is needed, drastically cutting hidden costs and optimizing resources.

Ecological Transition and Recovered Materials

Another vital pillar for the survival and development of the business is the concrete commitment to environmental sustainability. In an era that demands a profound ecological transition, integrating the principles of the circular economy into industrial processes is no longer a secondary option, but a categorical imperative.

MCS SpA tangibly applies this philosophy by regularly using recovered materials for its structural works. A particularly virtuous example is the systematic use of recycled rubber, derived from the shredding and decommissioning of old electrical cables and exhausted tires. This material is reintroduced into the production cycle to create high-efficiency thermo-acoustic insulation. This method not only lowers the ecological impact of new residential and commercial buildings but also actively contributes to reducing the global volume of industrial waste destined for landfills.

“We must dispel the old myth of strenuous work: today, construction sites are places of high-level engineering where massive automation has eliminated physical fatigue, offering young people highly competitive salaries and the real opportunity to build our country’s future with their own hands.” (Massimo Locatelli, MCS S.p.A)

The Shortage of Human Capital and New Training

Aside from the difficulties related to procurement and operational costs, the real emergency for the construction sector concerns human capital. Finding young talent willing to embark on this career has become a titanic undertaking. Manual labor, unfortunately, still suffers from the heavy and unjustified prejudice of being considered precarious, excessively tiring, and lacking in social prestige. During the broadcast, recalling the spirit of disruption sung by Vasco Rossi in the song Liberi liberi, Locatelli highlighted the urgency of rediscovering passion and an innovative drive among new generations. Thus began a strong appeal to institutions and the school orientation system to return to tangibly valuing technical professions.

To autonomously bridge the deep gap between labor supply and demand, the most virtuous and structured companies are transforming into true training hubs. MCS SpA tackles the personnel issue by constantly investing in the internal training of its employees, through specialization courses focused on safety and the use of advanced machinery. Furthermore, it is essential to break down old clichés to attract young people: massive process automation has drastically reduced physical fatigue, making on-site operations significantly less strenuous than twenty years ago. Added to this is a highly significant compensation plan, as specialized technical labor today earns highly competitive salaries, often capable of exceeding traditional office pay.

The true economic and structural restart of the country inevitably passes through a profound maturation of the building industry. It is no longer enough to think solely about erecting buildings or infrastructure; we need to shape an ecosystem based on an unbreakable alliance between technological progress, environmental ethics, and the valorization of human resources. By putting the dignity, safety, and continuous training of the worker back at the center, companies will have the opportunity to guarantee superior quality standards. Only by demonstrating that the construction site of the future is a place of high engineering, safe and profitable, will it be possible to eradicate old prejudices and lay solid foundations for long-term economic development, capable of facing the challenges of the global market head-on.
