The Gioconda Torlonia at the Chamber of Deputies: institutions, culture, and territory for the enhancement of Italian artistic heritage

Thursday, June 11, 2026 – Sala della Regina, Chamber of Deputies – 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM

The prestigious Sala della Regina of the Chamber of Deputies will host a day of study and in-depth analysis dedicated to the Gioconda Torlonia on Thursday, June 11. This artwork is one of the most fascinating and debated pieces housed within the artistic heritage of the Italian Parliament. The initiative is promoted by the Parliamentary Intergroup for the Development of the South, Fragile Areas, and Minor Islands. This transversal body unites over fifty parliamentarians from the main national political forces, along with an authoritative scientific committee composed of over three hundred personalities from the academic, cultural, institutional, and diplomatic fields.

An Artwork at the Center of Cultural Debate

The so-called Gioconda Torlonia of the Chamber of Deputies returns to the center of attention for scholars, institutions, and cultural operators. The meeting intends to explore the historical, artistic, and identity value of the work, promoting a reflection on the cultural heritage kept by the State and the enhancement opportunities created through a dialogue between research, institutions, and cultural investments. The Parliamentary Intergroup, which over the years has awarded international figures such as Pope John Paul II and Robert De Niro, is dedicating its attention this year to an artwork that belongs to the history and identity of the Italian Parliament.

Opening of the Proceedings

The proceedings will be opened by the Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies Sergio Costa, the President of the Parliamentary Intergroup Alessandro Caramiello, and Hon. Stefano Candiani. The session will be moderated by journalist Luca Antonio Pepe and coordinated by Giovanni Barretta, President of the Technical Table, Stefano Colucci, President of the 17th Art Commission, Hon. Sergio Vaccaro, and Barbara Bonanni, Head of the Audiovisual Sector of the 17th Art Commission, who is engaged in the promotion and development of cultural and audiovisual projects of institutional interest. The organization and institutional relations of the event are managed by Michela Colucci, Head of Institutional Relations of the Parliamentary Intergroup for the Development of the South, Fragile Areas, and Minor Islands.

Scientific Contributions and the Presence of Massimo Osanna

The speakers will offer complementary perspectives on the history, research, restoration, and enhancement potential of the Gioconda Torlonia, with specialist contributions featuring Antonello Di Pinto, Sebastiano Giordano, Gianni Filippini, and Roberta Delgado. Among the most prominent guests is Massimo Osanna, Director General of Museums of the Ministry of Culture, an internationally renowned archaeologist, and a key figure in the relaunch of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii. His participation brings significant scientific and institutional authority to the initiative, strengthening the dialogue between the national museum system and parliamentary institutions.

Territories, Cultural Investments, and Awards

The event also represents an opportunity for discussion among public administrations, foundations, cultural operators, and investors interested in supporting future initiatives dedicated to the enhancement of the Gioconda Torlonia. The municipal administrations of Niscemi, Gaeta, and Venosa, alongside BCC Basilicata, have expressed interest as part of a path aimed at promoting future exhibition and cultural initiatives nationwide. During the event, Career Awards will be conferred to three protagonists of Italian culture and entertainment, namely Al Bano Carrisi, Peppe Barra, and Enrico Montesano. Furthermore, institutional acknowledgments will be awarded to Massimo Osanna, Gianni Quaranta, Giuseppe Carta, and Marco Ferrigno.

Culture, Identity, and Development

The day aims to act as a point of synthesis between research, institutions, and cultural planning, reaffirming culture’s role as an engine for social, economic, and territorial development. The enhancement of the Gioconda Torlonia represents not only an important opportunity for historical-artistic study but also a model of collaboration between the Parliament, the Ministry of Culture, local authorities, scholars, and sector operators, with the ultimate goal of promoting new opportunities for the knowledge and enjoyment of Italian cultural heritage.
