The handYcapped: Rolling for a Change

A young Italian creative is challenging the narrative of disability in the gaming world with a new project that combines entertainment, inclusion, and a commitment to scientific research

“The handYcapped” is the name of a project with a clear ambition: to become the world’s first video game starring heroes in wheelchairs. Conceived by Silvio Binca, a 25-year-old creative from Lucca, the game aims to shift the perception of disability away from pietistic narratives. In this game, the characters are not secondary figures or symbols to be protected; they are the protagonists of the action. They race, jump, and overcome obstacles, all from their wheelchairs, with energy and irony. Binca, who lives with desminopathy, a rare genetic muscular disease, channeled his passion for technology and video games to address a cultural issue: the systematic absence of disability representation in the gaming world. “I want children and young people to grow up seeing disability as something normal, not as a limitation,” explains Binca. The idea is that if a character in a wheelchair can be the hero of a cool, fast, and fun video game, the entire perception can change.

Normalizing Diversity Through Gaming

A young woman with long hair stands behind a booth at an outdoor event, displaying colorful merchandise and a prize wheel. The booth is branded with the name 'THE HANDYCAPPED' and features various items related to the project.

The project stems from the desire to educate through entertainment, using the immersive power of gaming to transform the social perception of disability, especially among the younger generations. Binca notes that the video game industry often focuses on “perfect” models and superheroes, viewing disability as a delicate or uncomfortable topic to represent. “I am convinced that representing us in games is not only right but necessary,” he states, “because everyone has the right to see themselves in a character, including those living with a disability”. The goal is to move beyond seeing disability as an exception and instead present it as a natural part of many people’s lives.

A Project with a Dual Mission

Beyond its cultural and pedagogical dimensions, “The handYcapped” has a very concrete objective: to raise funds for research on desminopathy. Through the association he founded, Binca has launched a GoFundMe campaign to support the development costs of the video game. The game itself will then serve as a tool to raise awareness and generate further funds for medical research into this little-known disease. This approach strategically combines technological innovation with social impact to foster systemic change.

A Call for Collaboration

The project is currently being carried forward by a small team, and there is a search for new collaborators and supporters to manage the extensive workload. The team is looking for 3D graphic designers, character animators, a game design expert to refine the gameplay, and support in marketing and communication to broaden the game’s reach. Binca emphasizes the need for both skills and sensitivity, as the project is “a way to leave a mark”. Companies can also play a crucial role through donations, technical support, or by offering their expertise. Those who choose to support “The handYcapped” are choosing to back a new, more courageous and authentic narrative of disability.
